Sarawak is a land of rivers,mountain ranges, forests and a long coastal stretch and estuaries that is washed by the South China Sea. For the last two years, I have been travelling the only highway that runs through the interior length and breath of Sarawak from the south i.e. Kuching to the north - Miri. In between the two cities there are many small and even tinier towns. On one of those trips I droped by at the town of Sarikei. Below is a video of the Sarikei Express Boat Terminal. Express boats are commercial passenger boats that ply the many big rivers of Sarawak carrying goods and passengers from and to the remote and inaccessible places in Sarawak ( along river systems) that are not connected to the Pan Borneo Highway. Fruity, Fruity
Over the course of a week in Kuching I came across few unique fruits of Sarawak. Of all the fruits below only the durian is seasonal. Durian- the King of Sarawak fruits is back in town this month of July. However from what I notice so far around the city, this year does not seem to be a bountiful durian harvest at all. ( Note: All the vernacular names below are in Malay)

Kedondong - Canaruim spp.
Manggis - Garcinia mangostana
Mengkudu - Morinda citrifolia
Sapeh Music
Unique to Sarawak is the 'Sapeh' music produced by a four-strings musical instrument. The sounds of the sapeh normally accompanies dance movements that men and ladies of many ethnic groups in Sarawak perform. Recently I came across two Sarawak Sapeh players demonstrating their skills at the Kuching Waterfront shop house. Hope you enjoy the mesmeric lure of Sarawak's sapeh music.
